COMPETITION TOPICS FOR 2025

FEBRUARY – GIPPSLAND OPEN (Digital)

Any subject, any style.  Whatever takes your fancy or captures your imagination as long as your image is taken in Gippsland. For this exercise Gippsland is the local government areas of Bass Coast, Baw Baw, East Gippsland, Latrobe, South Gippsland and Wellington.

MARCH – WATER IN NATURE (Digital)

Water can be liquid (fresh or salt) or frozen; can be still, running or falling. Focus on water found in nature like rivers, oceans, waterfalls, lakes or waterdrops on animals / plants.

APRIL – FOOD (Print)

Food photography is a still life photography genre used to create attractive photographs of food. This is about showcasing the food, use light and colour to help tell the story. This is not about people eating or cooking, so please don’t include people in your image.

MAY – BRIDGES (Digital)

A bridge is a structure built to span a physical obstacle (such as a body of water, valley, road, or rail) without blocking the way underneath. A great opportunity for the lines to do the talking, for stark simplicity or complex structural patterns, for contrasting elements, shadows and so on.

JUNE – FLOWERS (Digital)

Whether it’s a classic still life, a blossom-filled landscape, or a close-up of a flowerhead, we’d like to see your best flower photographs.

JULY – ACTION OR SUSPEND TIME (Digital)

Freeze motion by shooting at a fast shutter speed or blur it by shooting at a slower shutter speed. Images don’t have to be from a sporting event and can be from daily life. Basically, anything that is moving and you must show the motion. Examples include birds flying, wild animals fighting, people running, motorcycle racing, etc. Entries can be in black and white or in colour.

AUGUST - LANDSCAPES (Print)

Landscape photography typically captures the presence of nature but can also include man-made features. Needs to be taken in a horizontal, landscape orientation and can be entered in monochrome or colour. Common subjects for landscapes include mountains and valleys, fields, lakes, rivers and coastlines, deserts etc.

SEPTEMBER – AFTER DARK (Digital)

Capture your image after the sun has gone down. Let us see that it has been taken at night. Show us something of interest in your backyard, down the street etc. People, animals, landscapes, night sky, moon, as long as it has been taken at night.

OCTOBER – SILHOUETTE (Digital)

Using darkness to create shapes or stories where the primary subject colour is black. Silhouettes are the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible in restricted light against a brighter background. 

NOVEMBER – PHOTO HUNT (Digital)

Treasure Hunt (Digital): Our annual fun day out. You can’t plan ahead for this one. We will keep you posted!!! 

DECEMBER – OPEN (Print)

Any subject, any style.  Whatever takes your fancy or captures your imagination but this time your image can be taken anywhere.
